Where you go, we go - Aygo! Toyota's funky urban city car has had a makeover.

The Japanese marque's successful small European city car is back with a stylish new look, improved fuel efficiency and more personalisation options.

First launched in 2005, the Aygo's style and driving characteristics have been successful in attracting a young, urban-based demographic, so much so, it's currently the best selling A-sector car in the UK, and Toyota hope to continue that trend with their new revised model.

A few aesthetics have changed from the current model, it's fun character now comes with manga-inspired customisations, an appealing facelift with redesigned LED daytime running headlights, new grille and rear LED lights.

The sleek 5 door city car; 3-door option available on the base model, is not only stylish and economical, it's well-made and good to drive.

There's a new efficient powertrain available across the range - a nippy 1.0-litre, three-cylinder VVT-i petrol.

The 5-speed, 72PS will accelerate from 0-62mph in 13.8 seconds with a top speed of 99mph. It delivers a combined 68.9mpg with CO2 emissions from 93g/km.

There's also an automatic option - 67.3mpg with CO2 from 95g/km.

The new 2018 Aygo performs well in town, though it would benefit from having a sixth gear - especially on motorway driving.

It's not going to win any awards for acceleration on faster roads, but it's not meant to - it's a city car, not a luxury tourer. Even with new sound dampening material, upon acceleration, you will hear the three-cylinder engine make itself known inside the cabin.

It's a surprisingly comfortable ride, with good suspension and minimal road noise. There is slight body roll, particularly on faster corners, however in town, it's barely noticeable.

There's plenty space up front for adults, though the rear is best suited for smaller children.

In town, the Aygo is a responsive, agile city car. Steering is well balanced - though could be sharper, brakes are good and the gearing is smooth - making light work of manoeuvring through city traffic and tight parking spaces.

A rear-view camera is standard on all but the entry model and rear parking sensors are optional on all models other than the entry-level.

There's good visibility behind the wheel with ample seating comfort. Steering controls have good functionality and the minimalistic dashboard has a redesigned instrument panel and is clutter free allowing for easy use.

There's some exterior colour and dashboard inserts which help spice up the interior level of funkiness.

ABS, stability control, hill-start assist and tyre pressure warning are standard across the range, and all models come with decent levels of kit, apart from the entry-level X trim, though electric windows and USB connection are standard.

The X-play adds air con, multi-function steering wheel, height adjustable driver's seat and an easy to operate Pioneer developed seven-inch multimedia infotainment touchscreen with DAB radio and Bluetooth.

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are optional on the limited edition X-press trim, which includes 15-inch alloys, front fog lights and rear privacy glass.

The X-plore is the only model to have sat nav as standard, the X-cite adds a quirky Magenta Fizz paint finish with matching interior, and the range-topping X-clusiv offers two-tone paint finishes, seats with part-leather upholstery, smart entry/start system, automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning.

There's an optional power-retractable canvas 'funroof' available on X-plore and X-clusiv models.

A five-year/100,000 mile warranty is standard as is a twelve year anti-corrosion warranty.

The new Aygo goes on sale from July 1st, with prices starting from £9,695 for the 3-door and £9,995 for the 5-door.

With a fresh choice of alloy wheels and vibrant colours, if you're in the market for a well equipped, cheap to run city car that's value for money, then the new stylish 2018 Aygo should be on your list.
